March 3rd, 1927 – November 24th, 2024

Ulysses Wynn, 97, answered his call to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2024, gained his wings and took his heavenly flight.
He was born in Lincolnton, Georgia in 1927 to the late Mary Magdalene Wynn and Charles Norman March 3, 1927. He was the middle son of his siblings and was the sole surviving son and sibling.
He attended Tabernacle School. He came to Brevard in 1927 at the age of 15 to live with his oldest sister Mary Crite and go to high school, but there was no high school for him to continue his education. At the early age of 15, he learned the importance of working, serving God and serving others. He was member of Bethel “A” Baptist Church and served as a deacon.
In late December 1942, he went to work at Transylvania Tanning Company for 6-1/2 years as a machine operator-beam shop in the shipping department.
In 1949, he worked at Franklin Hotel as head bellman for two months and during this time he met the love of his life Josephine Smith.
In 1950, he went to work at DuPont for nine and a half months in construction as a laborer and cement finisher helper and married Josephine Smith.
In 1950 he married Josephine Smith Wynn. God blessed the union of Ulysses and Josephine with 72 years and 11 months and three weeks of marriage. One week shy of their 73rd anniversary his wife Josephine was called home. Together they had five children: Clark, Lennette, Dianne, Mazetta and Scott and nine grandchildren.
In 1951, he went to work for Ecusta Paper Inc., full time as a custodian for 12 years and as opportunity presented itself, he became a chauffeur for 28 years, handling supplies, mail, driving and delivering cigarette paper, cellophane to companies, RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company and American Tobacco Company, giving more than 40 years of service until reaching the time of retirement.
He also obtained a job at Brevard Federal Savings and Loan in 1960 as custodian until 1991 and continued working with the Jerome family as custodian of Jerome and Summery Insurance until 2017 on his 90th birthday. He worked this part-time job to fund all five children’s college education and purchase them each their first vehicle.
He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 72 plus years, Josephine Smith Wynn; son Ulysses Clark Wynn; and daughter Cynthia Diane Wynn Boyd.
Left to mourn his passing are two daughters Lennette Wynn of Brevard and Mazetta Wynn of Knightdale; son Howard Scott Wynn of Holly Springs; three generations of grandchildren: Antionette Wynn, Shanelle Wynn, Cedric Wynn, Natalie Wynn, Karkita Boyd, William Boyd and Alex Boyd; great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Over the years, he was blessed and presented with various awards: the Ulysses Wynn Scholarship given by Blue Ridge Community College in honor of Ulysses Wynn by the education committee; the Ethel K Mills Award for recognition of significant contributions to the community, Award of Appreciation presented for acts of kindness, dedication and deeds as president of the Transylvania Citizens Improvement Organization for nine years; served as treasurer of Scholarship Fund committee; two certificates of appreciation for outstanding citizen improvement and volunteer service to the community and state of North Carolina; Ecusta Safety Award for One Million Miles; 25 years of accident-free dedication and dependable driving (PH Glatfelter); presentation of willingness to serve with Transylvania Citizen Improvement Organization and a certificate of recognition of 40 years of service at PH Glatfelter.
